Today has been hard with a series of all to autistic meltdowns for my personal liking. A great nurse will sadly never know their true value, their full worth in their chosen profession. They may feel appreciated at times or fulfilled with their choice in life. I can't find the words to explain or express how humbled I have been today by the blessings of a nurse who not only chose an honorable profession but chose to answer a heart calling.
Leah made my day possible, she comforted, cajoled, and spoke plainly as the need arose through the day. She helped me feel in control by allowing me to take ownership of my choices but also by allowing me the freedom to change my mind if necessary. She never chose to bypass my feelings or offer me illusions for which I will be forever grateful. She broke things down for my understanding but never spoke down to me. She offered me choices and put her faith in my answers, so I too could feel secure in them. She greeted me at every encounter with a smile, even when met with my tears, and encouragement as well as a quiet strength and confidence that will stay with me even when I leave the hospital.
Leah advocated for me even when I was having trouble doing it for myself. She helped ensure that even as she left for the evening there was someone else to step in, stand with me and support my decisions. That's only a small drop in the bucket of what she's done for me today. I can't begin to thank Leah enough for her compassion, empathy, intelligence, and friendship.
Nurses are amazing people. We need to make sure each one never forgets that. A great nurse changes the world one patient at a time.
Thank you so much, Leah. You are one of the best examples of what a nurse should be and you have made a big difference in my life!
