My husband came to Memorial Hospital from the VA hospital intubated and near death. Tomorrow, ten days later, he will be discharged home, God willing. Multiple people contributed to his care and well-being from multiple disciplines, however one particular nurse deserves recognition. I don't want to take away from the multitude of people who touched his life and helped save him and helped him improve. However, this nurse listened to his emotional cry for help. My daughter and I recognized his need but we know him. Leigh Staffey however, even though busy, stopped to hear his need.
Leigh stopped and listened to my husband's individual need and helped him to recognize his need to have a cardiac catheterization and permanent pacemaker defibrillator. He realized she cared for him not just as a patient, but as a person with anxieties, concerns and fears. Yes, a lot of other people finally helped him realize he needed to stay to accomplish this goal, but she was the first to stop and listen and spend the needed time with him.
My husband didn't recognize how near death he was and how fortunate he is to be walking out of your facility to continue his life. He had a new grandson born while he was hospitalized and because of all the excellent people who cared for him, he has survived to be able to hold his thirteenth grandchild.
I could never recount each and every thing Leigh and others did to contribute to his survival and future. Leigh added compassion and listening to the care she delivered. Bless her.
