Because of a heightened PSA count my primary care physician sent me to Dr. K so he could take biopsies to determine if I did have prostate cancer. His studies came back positive. I did have cancer. My wife, G, was in the office when he gave us the diagnosis. It hit her very hard. Dr. K's nurse, a woman named Lee, took my wife aside and tried to calm her. Lee also spoke with G over the phone in succeeding days. She helped a lot. Dr. K ordered a CT scan and a bone scan on me to try to determine if the cancer had spread outside the prostate. I was to have the CT scan on a Thursday and the bone scan the next day, Friday. I got a call and was told the bone scan technician was away for medical reasons and I wouldn't be able to get the scan for several weeks. G knew the time was important when dealing with cancer so she contacted Nurse Lee. Lee found another technician from Spokane who was willing to come to Colville and perform the scan on Friday as had been originally scheduled. Because Lee cares about her patient enough to go well out of her way to help, I wound up getting the bone scan on time. I had surgery on the date that the bone scan was to be delayed to. I also believe, because Lee cared, when surgery was completed, my surgeon found that the cancer was localized in the prostate. It was a relatively fast-growing cancer with a Gleason number of seven. I have to thank Lee for her help and I give her great credit for helping to keep the cancer localized and removable.
