When I think of someone who is extraordinary, who has a gift of being therapeutic, and who has the tenderness for taking care of children, I think of Leslie Dunn. She is protective of her patients and their health, helps promote quality of life, aids in the alleviation of suffering and is a strong advocate for her patients and families. Her compassion, kindheartedness and caring disposition are evident in her interactions with patients. I have witnessed numerous times when Leslie was able to help ease a nervous child before a procedure with humor or an explanation in terms they can understand. I have also witnessed her singing silly songs to a child having difficulty taking medications. By taking the time getting to know her patients and families, Leslie helps strengthen their connection and evokes trust.
Besides Leslie being an amazing pediatric bedside nurse, she is also a wonderful coworker and Charge Nurse. Her positive attitude, as well as her sense of humor, and storytelling skills, help others get through a difficult shift. Her leadership, guidance and calm attitude during intense situations, her critical thinking skills, and passion for healing make her a strong example of what every nurse should embody. Leslie possesses amazing qualities as a nurse, coworker, and friend.
Leslie's Director validates these qualities when she stated: "For over 41 years, Leslie has spent her career caring for the pediatric population at CHKD, and has continuously remained an enthusiastic and compassionate role model. Spending most of her shifts working nights, Leslie often finds herself in a position of leadership, whether as frequent charge RN or simply the "go to" RN because of her endless amount of nursing wisdom, critical thinking skills and problem solving ability. Leslie truly has a heart of gold and goes above and beyond on a daily basis to ensure her patients and families are comfortable and all of their needs are met. We are so incredibly blessed to have Leslie on 8B and as a member of the HemOnc Division!"
