Lidiya came on duty and had no idea of what she was in for. Not too many procedures are done in the ODS like installing chemo into the bladder.

My husband came in for a cystogram where it was discovered that he had multiple growths on his bladder. The Doctor removed them and did biopsies. He was very surprised at how quickly the growths had occurred. He decided to install a chemo drug directly into my husband's bladder. We were then to rotate his position over the next two hours. The chemo was instilled into his bladder in the recovery room and the catheter was plugged with a clamp. The installation was done at 1236 and he was transferred to ODS by 1320.

This wonderful woman came over from the side,Lidiya Rudka. She had personally dealt with someone previously with bladder cancer. She asked what the plan was as she assessed my husband. She looked at the catheter bag and it had quite a bit of fluid in it, probably urine and the chemo. She called for the Doctor and a Resident came down but we were not satisfied. Then another Resident came down, probably the chief who also indicated the 20 minutes should have been enough time. I did not believe that because of the Doctor telling us 1-2 hours. Finally when The Doctor himself came down he decided to repeat the installation. Lidiya did not get rattled or anything when she found out they were going to instill the chemo again. Lidiya got the gowns, gloves and biohazard equipment and assisted the Doctor. She was very gentle with my husband and even placed a pad so that none of the chemo would touch his skin. Lidiya then plugged the catheter with a Christmas tree plug per our request when they were going to use the same type of clamp as before. After the time was up from rotating him, she came in and meticulously took care of all of the chemo equipment. She truly went above and beyond!

It is true that it takes a village and the ODS unit do all work together. They all made our stay the best it could be including the nursing station clerk. All the staff are wonderful! We were extremely impressed.

The upshot of all this is a month later when we returned for a biopsy there were no new areas of growth. We believe it was in part due to the proper instillation.

Because of all of this and more we feel Lidiya should be honored with the DAISY award!
