I am an ICU doctor at another facility and recently had a 2-week stay at Swedish and required extensive surgery. His whole team is incredible, and I was so impressed with the nursing care on the 8th floor. But Lindsay stood out as an amazingly compassionate and smart nurse. "No one wants to take care of a doctor" according to most nurses, but Lindsay continued to "sign up" for the job. I was lucky enough to have her for I think 8 of my 14 days. My initial post-op time was pretty much Lindsay advocating for me to the surgical team around pain control, but in general, asking questions—making sure I was part of the treatment plan every day. We got to know each other personally—about our children, career path, etc. and I can honestly say I cried when I left the day of discharge. Being on the "other side" of the doctor/patient/nurse experience has given me some invaluable insights that I will bring back to my job in the ICU. I have always valued the nurses I work with, but Lindsay gave me an even greater appreciation for how critical their role is. Not just in being "competent," but in doing it in such a compassionate way—I can never thank her enough.
