My daughter was a patient of the SurgiCenter. It was a wonderful and scary experience all at the same time. After my daughter's surgery, my husband and I were called to the PACU area. Lou Ann, the assistance nurse manager and another nurse were trying to get B to wake up and keep her SaO2 up with humidified oxygen. Her tongue wanted to block her airway and cause her SaO2 to drop. I was becoming frantic. Lou Ann was calm and had to keep me calm the entire time. They also had to suction her several times getting her bloody mucus out of her mouth. My husband does not do blood. He then started to get faint and went out, so the PACU staff had an additional patient. Lou Ann was not only cradling my daughter to keep her airway open, but she and another nurse yelled for staff to take care of my husband. The staff was quick on the draw at getting my husband on a bed, with a cool rag on his head. The staff not only tended to their already busy PACU, but tended to my husband as well.
We were there till 1pm due to B having a hard time waking up and weaning from her oxygen. The nurses got me comfortable on the bed and placed B in my arms so we were both comfortable and got my husband some ginger ale. My nerves were wreaked and Lou Ann put them at ease.
When it comes to my children and being a nurse, I know enough to be "dangerous". The staff quickly put me at ease, helped me to be calm, assisted my husband and still gave great care to my daughter.
This is what great nursing care is all about.
