I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the extraordinary efforts of Shirley "Maddy" Romero, RN on MSU. One of our oncology patients was a direct admit from another facility and was placed on MSU for treatment. The patient was experiencing unremitting back pain for which he sought treatment at the other facility. Unfortunately, his admission paperwork was not thoroughly examined by the admitting physician and key factors regarding the patient's current healthcare needs were missed. The patient was also not able to fully articulate his needs due to a lower health literacy level as well as some cognitive processing delays.
Maddy exemplified the core values of this organization as well as upheld the nursing code of ethics by advocating the for this patient's needs and collaborating, not just with myself as an oncology nurse, but also with the hospitalists group, palliative care, and physical therapy. She is an example of integrity, caring and compassion, and leadership not just with this patient, but with all of her patient interactions as well as within the organization. Because of her professionalism and commitment to patient-centered care, she advocated for a more thorough examination of the findings from the other hospital. This patient was diagnosed with extensive bone metastases and a urinary tract infection. By her commitment for caring and compassion, Maddy advocated for consults to this patient's oncologist, palliative care, radiation oncology, and physical therapy. The patient was subsequently treated for a UTI with antibiotics, evaluated and properly treated for his pain, and will have an opportunity for further treatment and follow-up care.
While this patient's future may be uncertain, there is no doubt in my mind that Maddy fundamentally improved the quality of life for this patient while he was under her are. Her humility and compassion continue to be a source of great pride for me as I have watched Maddy grow into an incredible nurse.
