End of life is not easy for anyone. I can say without reservation that Margo made that process far easier for my grandfather and all of his family. Her compassion came through in her many thoughtful words, simple gestures, and extraordinary care. She made certain that he was comfortable and at peace. She made sure that all of his needs were met with dignity, while mentoring other nurses. My grandfather would open his eyes when he heard her voice and would smile when she talked to him. In his final moments, it was only him and her at his bedside as I was watching from the sofa. She was talking to him after turning him and cleaning him up. As she chatted without response from him, he opened his eyes, smiled at her with a huge grin, and took his last breath. She stood there a moment and then told us that was it. She turned around and had tears in her eyes.
There is no doubt in my mind that he touched her life. There is even less doubt that she touched his. My granddaddy was terrified of dying but in the end, with her care and love, he left this world with a smile on his face. I will never forget that moment and I will never forget the nurse who was there. I know that he wasn't scared - what a gift she gave us!
