As a highly experienced cardiac nurse, Tina Teofilo always uses her great clinical expertise and her calming bedside manner to help relieve anxieties. Being in the hospital and being sick can cause anxiety for patients and their families. Tina will acknowledge how they feel and go from there, guiding them through the whole in-patient process.
There was a female patient, in her 40's, admitted for acute pain on her legs. The patient complained her pain was not well controlled overnight because she did not get what she requested. When Tina received the report in the morning, she recognized the difficult situation right away, notified the clinical supervisor and requested a visit from a patient ambassador. She also notified social worker and care manager to visit this patient to provide more resource because part of this patient's anxiety came from lack of insurance.
Tina won the trust of this patient, and she became less difficult and anxious for the rest of the day. Being a good nurse is more than just passing medication or taking your patients to the bathroom. Tina takes care of her patients with great sympathy.
One day she sent down a 40-year-old gentleman to Cath lab for a procedure. He coded in Cath lab and passed away. Unfortunately, nurses and doctors were unable to locate any family member at that time. When Tina heard what happened, her heart sank; she went to Facebook and started to search and locate this patient's family members. Two hours later, one of the family members responded, and then more family members showed up in the hospital. Tina offered herself to help bring the body up and prepared a private room for the big group to spend time with their loved one. Tina treats every patient with respect and dignity.
Another one of Tina's patients came from prison for chest pain, a deputy was in the room with him. Tina treated this patient just like she treats other patients, attended his needs right away, answered his questions, and calmed him down. Tina's favorite words are, " Don't worry, it's being taken care of, relax everyone." Tina is such a great asset to our organization, we are very blessed to have her here! I do not hesitate to nominate her for the DAISY Award!
