DAISY AWARD WINNER 1ST QTR 2009 – Marie Thomson (NICU) –Nominated by: Meralyn Hilado, RN - NICU
Marie Thomson is a very hard working and dedicated nurse. You will never find Marie doing anything not work related during work hours. If the unit is not busy, you can expect to see Marie doing her call backs, which are follow up calls to our discharged patients to determine is there is anything else we can help the family with. Marie organizes and teaches “Patient Education Class” that teach our parents about infant safety and related information.

As a BCLS Instructor/Trainer, Marie teaches CPR to both hospital staff and our patients that need the class/demo before discharge. She also co-chairs the Preemie Reunion Committee and heads the bake sale fundraising for it. She is also a part of the Garage Sale Committee for the fundraising of the Asthma Kids’ camp that is held every summer. At the same time, she also organizes the “Texas Hold‘em” fundraiser for the STARS (Seeking Techniques Advancing Research in Shunts). She also participates each year with the March of Dimes and volunteers to help with the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Festival of Trees program. It’s always a comfort knowing that you’re working with Marie, for she is a very good team player. She anticipates your needs and helps you.

Marie wrote the proposal and received grant money to purchase the “halo sleeper” for the NICU babies to use, and also to be given to the babies upon discharge. The halo sleeper is a major part of the “Back to Sleep” campaign encouraging and teaching parents to put their babies to sleep on their back, for infant safety. As part of the campaign, she also travels to different institutions and clinics to promote and give lectures about the program, and as a result of community awareness, infant mortality rates have decreased.
