After our daughter required resuscitation at birth and was diagnosed with brain injury my husband and I were beside ourselves. It seemed that all of our questions were answered with "we will just have to wait and see what happens over time". We felt hopeless and like no one could give us the answers we needed. The first time we met Marie she had come in for a night shift and immediately took charge of our daughter's situation. She gave us a better idea of what we needed to be looking at over the course of the next few days. This was the first time anyone had taken the time to really explain things to us in the way we needed them to be explained.
Over the course of the following weeks, Marie became our primary nurse and we looked forward to seeing her each weekend. She was an excellent advocate for our daughter's needs and each night she worked we felt at ease leaving the hospital knowing S was in good hands. Marie was the only person we trusted to treat our daughter as well as we could treat her. S, in return, responded positively to Marie and together we all formed a sort of bond. Marie was with us up until discharge where she made sure S had all of the necessary resources to go home. Had we not met Marie I believe our 12 week long stay in the NICU would have gone much differently. We will never forget Marie or the impact she had on our daughter's care. She is truly a blessing to the nursing profession.
