Marsha admitted a patient for lung surgery who had recently had surgery to remove a tumor from his brain. His prognosis was not good. He was a strong man, about 6'5". After Marsha was finished with her admission, she made sure he was comfortable and left the room. After a few minutes, we could hear loud voices coming through the curtain. His wife and daughter were calling for help. I went in the room and called Marsha to come. Her patient was moving around the room repeatedly stating, "I need to go! I need to get out of here!" His wife and daughter were trying to calm him down. He would not get back in his bed and was removing his SCDS and pulling on his IV. He was becoming increasingly agitated. He continued in a loud voice stating he needs to go. At one point, he asked, "I need to know what is this place? Is there anything between Heaven and Hell? What is between Heaven and Hell!? I need to know!" Marsha very calmly looked him in the eyes and simply said, "Jesus." I could see him immediately relax. It was amazing. He got back in bed and was fine after that. It was awesome to see how in tune she was with her patient. She listened to her gut and knew exactly what he needed.
I am grateful every day that I get to work with such an awesome nurse!
