I recently went through a health scare and needed to have surgery due to a high family history of cancer. I immediately began thinking more negative than positive thoughts. On the day of my outpatient surgery I was treated wonderfully from the moment I walked in the hospital. From the OP volunteer, to all the staff I encountered in Same Day Surgery, everyone made me feel welcomed and cared for, which had a very calming effect. It was nice to be taken care of by professional nurses who possessed the clinical skills to do their job while also being treated as a friend.

Mary Bohman stood out to me because she not only demonstrated these nursing skills and worked with the team who was caring for me, but she also included my family in what was going to happen and any updates regarding surgery times and what could be expected after my surgery. As my surgery time neared my anxiety increased and Mary noticed this. What she did next made her stand out as an exceptional nurse to me. I will always remember and be grateful that she came into my room and in the most caring way asked if I would like to say a prayer together. Mary offered the most beautiful prayer for me, for the doctors who would be doing my surgery, for all the staff involved in my care and that I would be cancer free. My anxiety was so much less after this experience.

Mary truly is a nurse I will never forget and I want to thank her for including the mind, body and spirit of nursing as she delivers care to her patients.
