When Mary finishes doing her work, she goes around and asks the other nurses if they need help. And if they do, she attends to it at once. Evidently, this is just part of her nature. She does this all the time. How many times have I been at my desk and seen her come up and answer the call light when I was busy with something else? She'll even come up and answer the telephone if she hears it ringing on my desk or even answer the alarm inside one of the rooms, regardless of whose responsibility it is to check that. She will immediately go to see if everything is all right as if she were the nurse in charge of that room. She wants to do the best job she can. The welfare of the patients is foremost in her mind and she is willing to do whatever it takes to get that done. Because she does this extra work every day, she makes my job less stressful. She never complains about her assignment or that she has too much work. And I can say without fear of contradiction that she arrives on time every day and with a smile on her face and she attends to her patients with that same smile.
I have never seen Mary cranky or grumpy. She's always cheerful and friendly. I remember one day when she was on her way to help. Nurse C was having a problem with a patient who was complaining that he couldn't breathe. Until we were able to code that patient, Mary was running back and forth getting things done that needed doing. I honestly don't know how she manages to finish her work every day when half the times she is on to helping someone else.
