A patient, a family and one of her co-workers nominated Mary. All recognized her commitment to being there at all hours of the day and night to walk them through challenges in acquiring or providing comfort and treatment for renal failure. One mother noted that while on vacation, they met many wonderful nurses on their journey, but realized how special Mary and her team are at the Oishei Children’s Hospital Dialysis Unit.

The Journey’s End Program sponsored a 4-year-old from South Africa whose family fled their burned down village to relatives in Turkey. They then realized he was ill with renal failure. They came to Buffalo, and Mary presented his family to the Site Practice Council for sponsorship. The family was extremely grateful for the care and support they received. A few months later, the boy acquired a kidney, and Mary coordinated his transport down to Pittsburgh. Because English was still a challenge for the family, Mary continued her support and guidance to this family.
