Phoenix Indian Medical Center has been participating in the DAISY Award since April of 2014. In six nomination cycles, Mary Sokalsky has been nominated by patients or their family members six times. Each patient's story and circumstances were different, but all of them echoed the same sentiment: Mary gave them eachloving, compassionate care and she made them feel likea person, not like a patient. The family members also shared the same common thoughts of feeling welcomed, valued, and loved by Mary. Mary makes each patient's stay at PIMC a comfortable one, even in times of crisis and suffering.
One patient wrote,"Iwas having a hard time with my toe amputation, and I was having a bad day. Mary comforted me while I was crying. She looked out for my mental health as well as myphysical health."
In another of her nominations,an elderly mother of a disabled female patient wrote, "Mary showed concern for my daughter's safety each timeshe was moved. Mary kept her comfortable. Mary truly is a "DAISY."
Many DAISY nominations have been received by many nurses, but Mary has had the most nominationsfora single nurse. Mary's gentle, understanding way with the patients deserves recognition.
