As I sit here on Christmas, I'm trying to wrap my head around the passing of my true love, soulmate, and husband. Although I don't (and probably won't) understand why he had to be taken from me, I do know this...
My husband was admitted to SCU from the Emergency Room until he passed away just four days later. During this brief stay, my husband (and I) were so lucky to have Matt as his nurse during most of his stay. From the first time I met Matt, I knew that there was something very special about him. He was more than just a "nurse". I was very fortunate that I was able to learn about who Matt was during these dark days. As my husband's health continued to go downhill during these days, it was Matt who showed him so much compassion, empathy, and care. Even though my husband couldn't truly appreciate all that Matt was doing for him. I was there observing and appreciating that Matt treated my husband as a human being and took such amazing care of him. Matt treated my husband as if he could have been a brother, cousin, grandfather or even his own father.
Matt could answer any question that I had and did so with the utmost honesty and integrity. The manner in which he could explain what was going on with my husband assured me that he was receiving the best care he could possibly get. Each night at 7 pm, Matt had to leave, and I was sad to see him go.
Matt didn't work the last day my husband was alive, but through all the sadness and grief, what has brought me the most re-assurance is knowing that my husband had the best nurse on that floor taking care of him. Matt is a true DAISY Nurse for everything he did for my husband in the last days of his life. Maine Medical has a gifted nurse in Matt.
