... Our family made a decision to seek support from Mercy Hospice for the care of our father who had been admitted to SJMO for a small stroke resulting from a gastrointestinal bleed. He had lost his wife of 70 years only a few months before. The Hospice Care Coordinator and Dr. R introduced us to the services available and provided much encouragement to our extended family. We could have never imagined how wonderful the care and services would be, but equally as important, the lasting friendship we would have with our primary care nurse Maureen McLean RN.

Maureen made an enormous difference in J's last year of life as well as each of ours. Maureen visited Dad weekly assessing his status, adjusting his medications, making certain he was comfortable and also providing directions to the Home Instead staff. Dad would "light up" when Maureen came into his room. She kept him informed as to his clinical status and progression. After Dad could no longer be at home, she followed him to St. Ann's Mead, joined the team there for conferences and continued to provide services. After an unfortunate fall, Dad was admitted to Beaumont and they facilitated a contract with Beaumont so Maureen could remain his hospice nurse. Maureen stood tall with the Beaumont staff insisting that his symptoms be appropriately managed. When Dad died Maureen was the first person we called.

Now that weeks have passed and as we plan for his memorial service, Maureen's name comes up frequently and fondly. Some of the comments from family members have been:

Maureen...

Was so kind and compassionate to Dad and each of us

Was always available and responsive

Was down to earth; honest and forthcoming

Provided excellent clinical care and kept him comfortable

Became part of our family

We will forever be grateful for Mercy Hospice care, Dr. R, Maureen and the rest of the wonderful team!
