My brother P was diagnosed with aplastic anemia and required platelet transfusions 3 times a week. I often took P up for these transfusions. Due to the frequency of the transfusions, we became well acquainted with Maureen, a nurse in the infusion center. She was able to provide the utmost quality of care as a healthcare provider but also provided care to the person that my brother was. There were some very difficult days and Maureen was always able to put a smile on my brother's face and ensured he had his Pepsi while he was waiting. Never did she make my brother feel like a burden for asking for another Pepsi and would joke right along with him and talk Husker football. She would always pop in to say hello even if P wasn't her patient. When my brother was hospitalized in Omaha she would frequently call up and talk to his nurse to check in on him, always ensuring they were taking good care of him. She was even caring enough to come to my brother's visitation and spoke extensively to my family members. Nurses aren't just responsible for providing medical care but care to the person suffering from the illness. Maureen cared so deeply for her patient. I am blessed that my brother was able to have Maureen as his nurse.
