We had a patient that required a transfer from our ICU to VCU for specialized care. The patient was confused and unable to consent for transfer. Although the transfer was needed, it did not meet the criteria for emergency transfer that could be done without consent. He had no next of kin on the chart. Melissa diligently searched through google and other internet sources to locate the gentleman's family. Finally, she found a phone number similar to the patient's own phone number and was able to determine that the individual she contacted was indeed the patient's estranged wife. The wife came to the hospital, provided proper patient identifiers and validation of her relationship to him. Eventually, we were able to obtain consent for transfer from the wife and the patient was able to receive the care he needed in a timely manner. Melissa's willingness to go above and beyond to assist this patient truly reflects her compassion and genuine concern.
