Miriam is very patient focused in her teaching. She puts patients at ease with her pleasant telephone manner and quite often I hear her laughing with her patients. Her expertise with giving prep instructions helps the patients understand what they need to do to prepare for their procedures. Patients are more likely to follow the prep instructions when they feel the nurse is really communicating with them, and Miriam is able to make that connection. Her warmth and personality makes patients and co-workers feel special. Many times I have heard her go the extra mile to ensure the patient's needs are being met. I have heard her call other departments at Sanford and also outside of Sanford. As an example, gathering information if the patient has not been able to get the requested documents. She has called pharmacies to help the patient get the prep medications they need.
Miriam is a leader in our office. She willingly took on more duties when she was needed to do so. She works as a Triage Nurse and a leader for our office. She has organized and updates a resource book for the office, which helps all of us. She volunteers for committee's, such as developing a workflow system for the education nurses. She types up the work schedules and updates when needed. She always communicates with each nurse during the day to ask if we need help, or just to get a feel about how our day is going. Miriam has been a preceptor for new employees and this old nurse learning the Triage role again. I feel comfortable asking questions and she encourages us to be the best we can be. She is able to communicate effectively, and in a professional manner if there is an issue that needs to be discussed with an individual. She encourages group input at Huddle Meetings. She treats the non-nursing staff with respect and voices her appreciation for their work. We truly need to work as a team and she helps all of us work toward the goals of effective education for each patient.
She is respected by our medical providers and communicates well with them by phone or staff messages. I have heard her call clinics outside the Sanford system and is always kind and appreciative when gets the information she needs for patients being referred to our department.
Miriam works well with interpreters also, always being appreciative of their help.
I feel privileged to work with Miriam and I know the rest of the staff feels this way also!
