Nancy Wright is a nurse in the Pre-operative Assessment Clinic (PAC). She is very diligent and caring. She always goes the extra mile to do what is right for the patient. She is very thorough in her review of a patient's chart. On several occasions, she has found incorrect information scanned, or when things are missing in the chart she will make numerous phone calls to obtain the information and have it scanned appropriately. There were two recent occasions that Nancy found critical information missing from the patient's chart and continued her follow up until the problems were resolved.
Recently a patient was seen in PAC by Nancy. Through chart review, Nancy read several provider notes on the patient to get a better picture of the patient prior to entering the room. Nancy read a recent note from the patient's hematologist that stated he was putting the patient on anticoagulation. Upon reviewing the patient's medication list, she did not see this medication on it. She notified the anesthesia provider of the discrepancy. The hematologist responded back to an inquiry about the medication and he had forgotten to order the medication for the patient. The hematologist was very thankful that the error was found and harm was prevented.
Another example, a patient came to PAC who had a legal guardian. Upon reviewing the chart, Nancy did not see that the guardianship paperwork had ever been scanned into the chart. Upon further review, Nancy found multiple consent forms scanned into the patient's chart signed by the patient. She contacted risk management to clarify. She then contacted the patient's nursing home, had the guardianship paperwork faxed to our office, and walked the paperwork over to admitting to be scanned immediately into the chart. These are just two examples of Nancy's diligence and dedication to her patients and her profession. Nancy is also our go-to for any hard sticks in the clinic. She willingly assists her fellow coworkers who need help with their labs or IV's. She treats her patients with the utmost compassion and is the ultimate team player.
Nancy also started the MRSA screening process for patients with a history of MRSA/VRE. Her intent was to have those patients who are no longer positive removed from this designation (banner in O2) so that isolation is not required for future admissions. She was diligent about pursuing this as patients in isolation are already "isolated" enough not to mention the impact it has on staff members. Having patients out of isolation also allows better usage of private rooms for those that truly need them and serves as cost savings to the organization. Nancy continues this process tracking and following up to make sure that all parts are completed. She has received positive feedback from patients who are grateful when they can be removed from the isolation requirement. She does this on her own initiative, during her downtime, and has sustained the work despite ongoing challenges. Nancy Wright is a true rock star!
