I have had many opportunities to observe Natalie's compassion and dedication to her patients and their families.

An example from yesterday will demonstrate her extraordinary clinical skill. I was the primary care RN for a gentleman with a small bowel obstruction. The doctor ordered an NG tube to be place. The patient was so anxious - he paced, he went to the bathroom, he got on the phone - basically he did everything to stall. Finally, after getting him to the chair I made 2 attempts to place the tube. Unfortunately, the patient would grab my arm before allowing me to get the tube turned down towards the back of his throat. Knowing we need another plan, I called the doctor for Lidocaine jelly and anti-anxiety medication. I asked Natalie as RN charge to come be a 2nd pair of hands for me. Then I had to care for another patient that was being discharged and I had to leave the room.

When I returned Natalie was talking with the patient, who was crying this time, explaining all the options and why it was o important to try this conservative treatment. Natalie, never frustrated but listening and acknowledging the patient's fears and concerns, ultimately was able to get the patient to agree to place the NG tube if he was allowed to assist in inserting the tube through the nares. The patient had a major sinus surgery/turbinate removed and felt he "could feel where to go and not push".

Natalie looked at me astonished as this was a 1st request like this in both our nursing careers. Reluctantly we agreed to allow him to assist with the insertion. The patient in a calm and controlled manner was able to tolerate the insertion of the tube.
