Recently on 9Tower, we cared for a patient that was hospitalized for an extended period of time. Our Interim-Manager rounded with the patient daily. The patient would often express how wonderful the 9Tower staff was and would historically close the conversation with, "When I get back to my country, I'm going to share how wonderful Danbury Hospital and its staff were to me." She was quick to note that there was a nurse who made superior efforts on her behalf. When she spoke of Patty Testa, she often had difficulty containing her emotions. She shared how Patty cared for her whole self. The patient found herself undomiciled on discharge because the friends she had previously taken residence with abandoned her. Patty took the initiative to remain in communication with the patient because she was discharged to a local hotel, refusing to take an offer from Patty to stay in her home. Patty visited the patient frequently providing food, clothing and essential supplies. Patty connected with friends in the community to raise funds to send the patient back to her country. Her fundraising efforts were so incredible that they were even able to send needed supplies for the secluded community that the patient was returning to. This was an amazing humanitarian gesture, but it is just one of the many stories I could share about Patty. Many nurses discharge their patients and the nurse-patient relationship ends. But Patty is a very different type of nurse, she cares for each person holistically and has a moral compass that we should celebrate. We can change the world and make it a better place, but it's in our hands to make a difference.
