On an extremely challenging night in the OB Unit, Paula demonstrated exemplary nursing care and dedication to not only her peers, but also Pen Bay Medical Center. Her extraordinary compassion for others was made clear with her actions on a night that without her, could have compromised safe patient care.
As our core night staff of three was juggling four labor patients, a monitored baby and another couplet, it quickly became clear we needed extra help. After many phone calls were made we began to feel like we were running out of options. As our first delivery happened, it became apparent the infant was going to require one-to-one care in the nursery. It was then that our supervisor made a call to Paula. She wasn't on call that night, but out of desperation, we thought she may be able to help in some way. Not only did she answer her phone, she immediately came to our rescue in the middle of the night. She freed up the hospital supervisor so he become immediately available to help.
With a smile on her face, she was not only overseeing the hospital, but checking with our unit continuously to see how she could help. She not only helped with direct nursing care of our patients, she was truly concerned with the self-care of the staff. Not only that night, but always she is a true role model to all the nurses and staff at Pen Bay. That night, she proved that at any time of day or night, she is a committed member of our nursing team.
