Rebecca is an exemplary member of our nursing team and indispensable to the SICU. She is innovative in facilitating processes that better our patient care. She strives to provide the best, safest care for her patients and all of the patients on the unit. She is a rotating charge nurse, precepts new nurse interns, as well as cares for patients at the bedside. She was the chair of the Unit Based Council for two years until it was time to step down. She is currently the chair of the Code Blue Committee. Within these roles, she is always looking at ways she can facilitate process improvement, which will, in turn, help the patients and staff caring for them. Rebecca, or as she is better known, 'Beckie', is the first one to begin sign-ups for pot lucks and other activities that facilitate unity among staff members within the SICU and beyond. When Beckie gives a report and 'hands-off' her patients to the next shift, it is known that they will have been cared for as though that person was her personal loved one.
Beckie recently cared for a patient who was high acuity with a poor prognosis. Despite being very busy she made time to discover that the patient only had one family member and the two were very close. After connecting with that family, Beckie discovered that Thanksgiving was their favorite holiday to spend together. Knowing this, and after a family-physician conversation about death being imminent, Beckie decided to give the family one last holiday together (despite it not being Thanksgiving). Beckie arranged for Thanksgiving food to be brought into the SICU and decorated the patient's room with autumn decor. She had other people facilitate with their contributions to provide this family with a last great memory. The patient expired soon after, however I can only imagine if this was my loved one, I would hold that memory as a cherished memory forever. Beckie is a true DAISY Nurse!
