My dad fell down the stairs and suffered a traumatic brain injury. Dad was hospitalized on the intensive care unit for a week, and while we received excellent care from all the nurses, Bekah was an extraordinary example of the spirit of nursing. Our family is made up of healthcare professionals; many of my dad's siblings, he was one of ten, are nurses, nurse practitioners, and physicians. My mom and I, one of his three daughters, are both registered nurses as well. Yep, we're one of those families. Bekah was gracious, calm and knowledgeable under pressure; she was a steadying force during the most challenging time we have faced as a family.
As we sat at the bedside telling stories, exchanging hugs, laughter and tears, Bekah stood beside us and shared in the love of our dad. After we decided to pursue comfort care, Bekah shouldered our grief as we mourned the death of this incredible man. Bekah's care of our dad was delivered with a quiet and beautiful reverence. She spoke softly to him as she performed her tasks with compassion and the utmost respect for his dignity and personhood. As the daughter of a patient, her caring heart and easy ways were an immeasurable comfort; as a fellow nurse, it was a privilege and inspirations to witness Bekah elevate the practice of our shared profession.
While this is a journey I wish we had never had to take, Bekah was a bright light in the darkest of hours. I speak for my whole family in extending my overwhelming thanks, gratitude, and love to Bekah for the care she gave us all during this impossible time.

Note: This is Bekah's 2nd DAISY Award!
