Roberta made me feel safe. I had just delivered my twins 8 weeks early because of preeclampsia and I had been through a lot physically and emotionally that day. Roberta was my nurse overnight. I was on a magnesium drip and it was making me feel horrible. Roberta was there, every hour, doing a very thorough check of everything, responding to my requests, calming my fears and supporting me emotionally. I was pretty out of it because of the magnesium, lack of sleep and emotional exhaustion, but I am still able to remember how relieved I felt by the care that Roberta was providing to me. At the time, she was pregnant as well, and we were able to bond a little through that. She worked hard to make me feel connected and to make a difficult situation as good as it could be while dealing with my medical issues (like high blood pressure, low urine output, a high-risk medication drip) in the most expert and professional manner. My mother had insisted on staying the night with me while my husband cared for our other child at home and she said she felt comfortable enough to sleep that night because the nurses caring for me were so responsive and helpful. They made us feel safe and secure in a very frightening and unstable time. I am grateful for their care and remember them fondly, even while writing this, 9 months after the care was delivered. I am sure Roberta would say she was just doing her job and that's just part of what makes her a good nurse.
