Rose's consistent dedication and contributions to her patients is inspirational and admired by her peers. Her individualized care to patients exemplifies the core philosophies of the DAISY Foundation. Rose was caring for a certain veteran who was scheduled to have open heart surgery. This elderly veteran drove himself from Fort Myers to Tampa alone. He mentioned to Rose he had no friends or family. After surgery, he was transferred to SICU and four days post-op he celebrated his 70th birthday. He didn't have friends or family to visit or call, however, he did have an amazing nurse. Rose bought a card and a cupcake. With a peer, she went to the SICU on his birthday delivering the card signed by CICU staff, a heart shaped pillow, and the cupcake. Additionally, she gave him a hand-written letter from her son who thanked him for his service and told him that he was inspired to become a hero "just like him". This Vietnam Veteran had previously been hesitant to use the VA facility. He told Rose it brought back terrible memories of when he returned to the U.S. after the war. Rose made him feel appreciated and valued. When you follow Rose, patients compare you to her. One morning when going to my patient's room to introduce myself at the start of the shift, I was greeted with a, "Oh…hi. Uh, when will Rose be back to work?" Without exception, all of Rose's patients love her. Even more, her coworkers love and look forward to working with her. I have never once seen Rose answer the call bell and then find the nurse to inform them of their patient's needs. She treats all patients as if they are her own, putting their needs ahead of her own convenience. When her assigned patient care is complete you will find her asking others how she can help. I feel so proud and even count it a gift to work with Rose. She makes a substantial and lasting impression on all her patients.
