No words can express the type of critical care nurse Ruairi Brady, RN is. But if you have never met him, I hope this nomination will give you a sense as to who Ruairi is, not only as a nurse but as a person. Ruairi came to SMEMC about 4 years ago and ever since then, the ICU has never been the same.
His communication style is that of confidence and not arrogance. I have heard him at the bedside talking with patients and families in a manner that they understand and not feel belittled. He leaves them feeling confident in his skills. You can almost see them breathe a sigh of relief as they get to know him. His smile can warm even the coldest hearts.
He sincerely cares about his patients, their families and his colleagues. He is always a team player and helps the unit in any way he can. I have never seen Ruairi upset and he always has a smile on his face. He lets nothing stand in his way in going the extra mile. He goes above and beyond to ensure the comfort of his patients and their families. Of all the cards, letters and phone calls I receive from patients and families, Ruairi’s name always seems to come up. He leaves such a positive impression on patients and families.
In a recent letter from the family of a young neuro patient, Ruairi was praised for “being on top of things”, “that he looked at the whole picture” and “was totally focused on the patient and what was best.” The family felt safe leaving the bedside.
As a male nurse myself, I am grateful that men like Ruairi enter the profession of nursing and contribute a sense of caring, compassion and respect that he does. He is truly someone who can change the image of nursing for the better.
He exemplifies the mission, vision and values of the Nursing Division and of Resurrection Healthcare and we are so lucky to have him as a staff nurse in the ICU at SMEMC. It is for his excellence, respect and love for our patients and co-workers that Ruairi Brady receives the DAISY Award.
Congratulations Ruairi!
