Russell was the nurse assigned to my brother's care when he was admitted to Sacred Heart with a GI bleed requiring a transfusion of blood. Having worked in hospital, clinic, and urgent care settings myself for the last 38 years, in observing Russell it is apparent that this young man has "old world" values, attitudes, and skills not often found in today's younger generation. He has a strong work ethic and a servant's heart. It is obvious he takes great pride in his work. He goes about his duties willingly, cheerfully, and seems happy to be of service. He listens actively.
My brother told me, "I know Russell heard me, he always repeats back to me what I say; I like that. He cares." Russell does an excellent job of "managing up". He always speaks well of the provider assigned to the case and leaves the patient feeling confident.
Respect and dignity: Russell always called by brother by name and made good eye contact. He would end the interaction asking, "Is there anything else I can do for your sir?" and said it with sincerity.
Leadership: Here is where I witnessed Russell at his finest. My brother continued to lose blood and had a syncopal episode in the bathroom. Simultaneously assisting and reviving my brother in a calm and reassuring manner, and at the same time directing the panicked student nurses. Russell managed the care flawlessly, yet humbly, saying he was doing his job, but he handled it skillfully, swiftly, and decisively. My brother and I are very grateful to have had Russell caring for him.
