Some of the greatest patient advocates are those nurses behind the scenes. I have had the pleasure of working with Ruth in the interventional radiology department and in MRI at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia. Her knowledge of radiological procedures and the compassion she has for every patient and family member she meets is truly inspiring and amazing.
I have worked many shifts with Ruth in interventional radiology where procedures can be long, and tedious, not to mention standing on your feet for hours at a time wearing lead that can weigh up to 15 pounds. Ruth always has a smile on her face and is never frazzled. Ruth takes the time to explain every procedure to the patients and their families and will answer as many questions it takes for the patient to feel comfortable. Ruth will stay with that patient from beginning to end to ensure they receive the best care.
I have witnessed Ruth orient new nurses, and being a nurse myself who was "just helping out" she takes the time to explain everything in a way that makes it easy to understand. She has patience and a way about her that makes you feel like you have known her forever, and that just by being there you have made the day that much better.
Being on the other side of things, I have had the experience of dealing with Ruth on a peer to peer level. Ruth always makes sure the handoff of patients is as smooth and safe transition. Ruth is always there ready to take report and is always respectful of fellow nurse's time and the patients. Whether it is taking a patient to IR or MRI, Ruth always calls ahead to discuss the needs of the patient. She also understands how the floors operate and how asking nurses to travel off the floor isn't as easy as it sounds. Ruth can be found more times than not returning your patient from MRI or IR.
When I think of the DAISY Award, I can't help but think of Ruth. Not only does she demonstrate excellence through the care she gives our patients, but she demonstrates what a nurse truly is through the care and respect she demonstrates for her peers throughout the Network.
