Several students from the Duke ABSN program have been paired with Sam during our OB rotation here at WakeMed. On each occasion, not only has Sam provided extremely hands-on, patient-centered care that truly exemplifies what a caring, always present nurse she is, but she has gone above and beyond to take each student under her wing, and treat each of us with tremendous kindness. During her busy shift, she makes a concerted effort to include us in providing care to patients, explains and teaches us skills and clinical reasoning according to our unique learning styles, and always has a smile on her face and a word of encouragement. Sam is the kind of nurse I hope to be, and an example for everyone. I can't think of a more deserving person for this award or a better way to thank her.
