Sandy’s approach to her work exemplifies teamwork, respect, caring, commitment and an attitude to bring her personal best in the role she has.
From my perspective as a patient, Sandy has a central role in interacting with patients and their families/supporter at a difficult and often emotional time in their lives. Sandy’s calm, reassuring manner brings its own healing when explaining procedures, drug regimens and anticipated side effects. Her respect for the amount and type of knowledge disseminated (more technical or for emotional support) demonstrates a level of caring and commitment to personal best that should recognized and celebrated.
Most importantly, Sandy’s nursing care to her patients extends beyond treating the health condition – she treats the patient as a person who happens to have cancer rather than as a cancer patient. At a time when cancer seems to take over all aspects of life BC (before cancer) Sandy has the ability to balance the clinical needs with the less obvious emotional wounds that surface. Reassurance, confidence, and comfort are just as important as the pre-treatment regimen for anti-nausea, allergic reactions, and anti-inflammation.
