The Women's Health Clinic responded to a full term OB patient who presented in advanced labor. Within 10 minutes she delivered a healthy baby girl in the clinic exam room. The birth was difficult because the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby's neck (nuchal cord).
Sandy Carl, RN, an experienced OB nurse, responded with the emergency delivery tray, calmed the patient and her husband, and alerted the provider who assisted. Fluids were contained, EMS arrived, and the front desk staff sang happy birthday and the family left the clinic safely.
The team demonstrated respect, integrity, teamwork and excellence in an emergency situation.
