My 9-year-old son recently had an unexpected/unplanned procedure in the OR. My husband and I were very nervous as I am sure most parents are and we believe C was as well but didn't show it as he is a "tough/fearless" boy. The second Sandy came into the room there was a sense of calmness that came over me as I felt like she had true compassion. She immediately introduced herself to my son and quickly picked up that he went by C. She told him that people referred to her as Grandma Sandy. Sandy was very attentive to my husband and me if we had concerns or questions but focused on C, ensuring that he knew what was going on while always telling him the truth. This seemed to really help as he never appeared anxious or fearful. C seemed less than thrilled with the idea of an IV so she went and got a catheter, took it out of the package and showed him exactly what it looked like and when he woke up there would only be the plastic part in his arm. All the while telling him that he would not be impressed with the IV but that it would be ok. She also asked what he liked to drink in preparation for PACU, so that she could have it ready for him and let him know that she would be there when he came out. She never failed to deliver, as soon as C came out of the OR she had everything lined up just as he had requested.
Some of Sandy's people skills and organization come with experience of being a nurse, but my perception of her care was so much more than that. She truly showed compassion and willingness to do whatever it took to make this a great experience for all of us. I am sure Sandy did not feel like she did anything out of the ordinary that day as I truly believe that she is this attentive and caring to all of her patients. Although, I will say she left a lasting impression on us and we are forever grateful to her for making this scary day not so scary.
