Sara Yoder was my sister's nurse while in the hospital. My sister was admitted in July and told to go to the 11th floor. They did not have a room available, so we had to wait. Not long after arriving, we met Sara and she saw that my sister could not sit due to her tumor, so Sara immediately got her a bed, so she could lie down while we waited.
My sister stayed in the hospital for 12 days and passed away. During this time, Sara was her day nurse most of the time. Sara became a part of our family. She was compassionate, professional, and selfless. My sister went through a lot and did everything she could to fight for her life during this time. Our family was distraught watching and not being able to help her. Sara gave us hope when she could and support when we needed it. She nursed our entire family, not just my sister. She cared deeply, and we could feel her "mental hugs" which helped us so much.
A lot happened to my sister while we were there, from inserting kidney stints to pain beyond imagination and trying to control it with pain medication we had never heard of. The doctor visited every day with an update. We tried to keep up with what he said but it is hard to remember and understand medical terminology in that state of mind. Sara would stay in the room and listen when he was there and then she explained it later when we could absorb it.
I'm sorry that it has taken me this long to nominate Sara, but I was unable to even write this before now. My family has a hole in it, but we will be forever grateful to Sara for giving my sister dignity when she died and for giving my family the compassion we so desperately needed when my sister was fighting for her life and we were trying to save her. Sara deserves the DAISY Award so much and we don't know how to thank her any other way. There are no words! We miss my sister every day and I have tears running down my face as I write this, but when I think of Sara Yoder, her smile, and how much my sister respected and liked her, I feel some peace that she had the best nurse I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.
