Our nurse, Sarah Barbeau, went above and beyond her call of duty as my nurse in labor and delivery. I came into the hospital after 3 days of labor- exhausted, defeated, and in unfathomable pain. We met Sarah at the start of her shift and she immediately took compassionate, direct control of my situation to get me the care I needed ASAP. I attempted to labor and give birth at home with my midwife and after 3 days of no luck, Sarah showed no judgment towards our natural approach and also no judgment that I had decided I needed pain relief fast. She encouraged me and instilled a new sense of focus and hope that I had lost over those three long days. She had absolute confidence in me when I did not in myself. Our son's heart rate was starting to drop dramatically with each contraction and she closely monitored and kept our doctor updated on every little change while still keeping my mindset positively reinforced (with a full labor and delivery floor no less!) We had to make some tough calls on the course of our care to bring our son into the world in the safest way possible, and she kept us educated and in the loop with each decision. When it came time to push our sweet little baby out (due to his decelerating heart rate) she took an active, leading role in the coordination of our team's effort and advocated for me each step of the way. From start to finish, Sarah showed an attentiveness and kindness that I have never encountered in a hospital setting. We will be forever grateful that she was a major part of the team that brought our son safely into this world. Her passion for her calling is rare and should be recognized and highlighted.
