My 82-year-old father was a patient and received excellent care from all of the nurses, but one, in particular, will stand out in my mind as an "Extraordinary Nurse". Sarah had an effervescent personality and made me feel comfortable. She was so caring and funny. She made a time that was so horrible in the life of our family one that was much more enjoyable. My brother and I had five days filled with stress that was suddenly turned around by laughter and smiles. Although the feeling didn't last long, those few minutes of serenity got us through the night. Sarah took the time to explain what was happening and why. She treated my dad as if he were her own dad. When we told my dad about the tests she administered to him and how he reacted to it brought such laughter to him that it was worth a million to see that laughter in him. My dad was given Ativan and zonked out and she aroused him and asked for responses to be given by swallowing because his eyes were closed. She told him to touch his fingers together, however, she meant pointer finger to pointer finger. Dad's eyes were closed so he didn't observe her demonstration, but instead gave her an ok sign with his fingers. She laughed so hard it was infectious. With dad, you have to be very specific such as right pointer finger to left pointer finger and this was the one moment in a week that got us through a very difficult night!
