I nominate Scarlett Owen, an RN from Labor and delivery, for the DAISY Award. I was admitted the Wednesday before last for hospital bed rest. Little did we know I would be diagnosed with HELLP syndrome a few hours later and forced to deliver just shy of 23 weeks. My little girl was born a still birth on Friday just after midnight. Scarlett was my nurse each night I was there. She was absolutely amazing and a blessing to have in what I will view as the most difficult time in my life to date. I am not one to show emotion especially in a room full of family falling apart and doctors/nurses who do not particularly know me. I feel the need to hold things in. Scarlett was so empathetic and compassionate with her care. She not only recognized that I was trying to be strong, but she helped ME to process when my family could not. Her communication in each step that was happening helped my family and me to understand the medication, the problems with the baby, the problems with myself, and our options. She maintained professionalism, and I completely trusted her with my care and pain management (I was not able to have an epidural due to my platelets being so low). I thought it was somewhat cruel to have to deliver my little one early and with having to contract for hours with no positive result in the end. Scarlett was there every step of the way. I do not think I mentally would have made it out of there if not for her...possibly I would not have made it physically either. Please know that I will forever be grateful to her.
