We unexpectedly found ourselves in the hospital when Dad was a direct admit from his MD's office with a suspected septic gallbladder. However, we discovered that our sweet daddy had liver cancer. A tissue biopsy was obtained and treatment options discussed, in hopes of having some extra time with our dad.
We were in the hospital for five days and we received excellent care during that time. We were scheduled for a follow up appointment the next day, but daddy continued to decline at home so we brought him to the ED. Again, we were treated wonderfully. It was then confirmed that our daddy, who had always taken care of everyone else, would be admitted to hospice. The next day, surrounded by his family, our hero died.
We would like to extend our deepest thank you to his nurse, Scarlett Smith, RN, who took care of daddy and all of us. She was an answer to a prayer for our family and there are no words that could ever be said to describe her spirit! You definitely have the best in that girl and she will forever have a place in our heart. She made sure our daddy died, just like he lived, with dignity and respect. She was there any time we needed her and even had us moved to a larger room so that we could have extra room during daddy's final hours. She is the epitome of what every nurse and person should strive to be.
Again, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you do every day for your patients and families. The extra mile you all go does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. It meant everything to us.
