Sean was one of my husband's nurses during the last few weeks of his life. Although all of the people who cared for him during this sad and sometimes painful time were wonderful, Sean was probably my husband's favorite. Along with his sense of caring and duty, he also had a sense of humor that eased things for both of us and we enjoyed talking to Sean.
As a former Marine, Sean brought a unique perspective to nursing, probably from his tours of duty in Afghanistan and when something went wrong, Sean had the "can-do" approach of a Marine and always took the extra steps to fix the problems.
Shortly before my husband passed away, he was put on a morphine drip for his pain. Sean and a student were putting it in when I noticed my husband stopped breathing. Sean noticed it and did what he needed to and what was necessary to confirm it. Then he came over to me and knelt down next to me and said, "He's gone." Sean gave me a hug and allowed me to cry my heart out on his shoulder.
Sean assisted me in helping to call the funeral home. To this day, whenever I see Sean, he gives me a big hug. He was on that sad day and is to this day, wonderfully supportive. He is an extraordinary nurse.
