Shana was the primary overnight nurse for a patient status post left total ethmoidectomy, endoscopic repair of CSF rhinorrhea, revision of left endoscopic maxillary antrostomy, and revision of left frontal sinustomy with the placement of a Raines stent. The patient was admitted to SICU overnight and discharged the next day. During patient rounds, it was evident that Shana effectively utilized AIDET to decrease this patient's stress and anxiety related to her hospitalization.
The patient stated that she was very scared to stay in the SICU environment until Shana introduced herself. While sitting with the patient, Shana eased her stress by explaining her plan of care for the night in addition to her experience taking care of these particular surgical patients. Shana effectively performed hourly rounds throughout the night to ensure the patient's overall well-being.
The patient reached out to me and stated, "The thought of staying in the hospital overnight was very scary, but having Shana there put me at ease. She was such a wonderful, caring nurse who truly cares for her patients. Shana was right, things did get better."
It is clear that Shana went above and beyond while following established expectations of Advocate's MVP, to ensure that this patient had an extraordinary hospitalization.
