I ended up on the Ortho floor during my stay after bowel surgery since all rooms were full. As a cancer patient, I was fearful about the care I was about to receive. I also had complications from my surgery with pulmonary edema, etc. Shane was the rock who kept me motivated and positive. His care was beyond what I knew to be normal. My fears and concerns were constantly addressed by Shane. My comfort was addressed every single moment by Shane. Despite my constant need for help, Shane stayed positive and provided clear details to me and my family and never left the room until all questions was answered. I couldn't even sit up and was frustrated beyond belief. Shane taught me to look at small accomplishments and focus on one day at a time and one moment at a time. He taught me to ask questions of the team of docs and guided me in this process to ensure my understanding as well. His commitment to my care every day made me forget I was on the Ortho floor and I felt as a cancer patient I was getting the best care possible from the best nurse ever. Shane's impact to my care allowed me the confidence to continue my treatment on the Oncology floor. Without his guidance I don't think I would have been able to face the Chemo that would really hold the cancer stable and allow me more time with my family.
