I was one of the Security Officers on your floor dealing with the family of a patient over the weekend. Due to the size of the family and their emotional state the Clinician contacted Security prior to the discontinuation of life support in case a disturbance ensued. The husband made the decision that no family member would be in the room at that time. When the time came, life support was terminated. As time went by Nurse Shannon Brace stayed in the room with the patient. I stood by the door in case any family member came in. What I saw was a very caring nurse spending time with a dying patient so she wouldn't be alone. She held her hand while the numbers on the monitor dropped, never leaving her side. When life ended she very gently and respectfully checked her pulse and listened with the stethoscope. The room was dark, very quiet but peaceful; she tucked her in for the last time and walked out. Even though family issues prevented them from being by her side for those last moments Shannon gave her peace and dignity.
