Today as I was walking down the hallway on E3, I noticed a man pushing a woman in a wheelchair. Upon further inquiry, this patient was being discharged and the husband and she were anxious to leave. I offered to assist them, letting the husband go and get their car, while I brought the patient to the front entrance. This patient and I started a conversation. She said she was anxious to leave, having been here for 6 days. She shared that she had just been on vacation in Florida with her husband and another couple for 10 days. After their return, she spent only 1 day at home when she came to our ED with some kind of insect bite that they feel she got while on vacation. She said that was why she was so anxious to finally leave, but shared all the staff were great. I asked her if there was anyone who stood out and she quickly stated "Shawna". She said that when she came to the floor, so many things happened quickly, being admitted, needed multiple liters of fluids, antibiotics (and eventually a trip to the OR). This patient stated that she had become septic and stated, "I thought I was going to die". It was during this time Shawna was her nurse. She said that Shawna provided and displayed not only competent manner, but a caring and compassionate one, taking the time to explain what was happening. She followed through with all the needed nursing care, while taking the time to sit with her, giving her a gentle touch to her shoulder, and giving her comfort in this stressful and uncertain time. She stated that Shawna was exceptional and stood out above and beyond.
