Shelly had a patient in his 40’s who was mildly mentally challenged. He’d had surgery the previous day and had to return urgently due to complications, for a second surgery. When he awoke in the Recovery Room the first thing he said was related to how he had many pictures of the Cox Air Care helicopter in his room at home.
Shelly talked to him about the helicopter and then called a flight team member and asked if someone could bring a hat or shirt to the PACU for her to give him. I told the patient that Shelly had been a flight nurse for many years - he was so impressed and then got embarrassed that she was right there beside him, like a celebrity!! Once the Cox Air Care hat arrived, he immediately examined it and put it on. No longer was he worried about the tube in his nose, or the drains in his abdomen, the hat was his only focus.

The patient was so thrilled, he told us his mom would think he was spoiled getting all this extra attention. When I told Shelly that I was nominating her for a DAISY Award, she said ‘he is the daisy, not me.’
