I nominate Shova Thapa for the DAISY Award. In early November, I was a patient on Pulmonary. I was diagnosed with Pulmonary Embolism following a Total Keen Revision done a week earlier. Shova was my nurse upon admission and it became very apparent that she was attentive and totally concerned about my condition. She contacted the Hospitalist whenever she felt I needed something she was unable to deliver and changed the care plan accordingly. Because of my shortness of breath and pain experienced the day of my admission, she worked endlessly with my doctor to provide any comfort possible.
It took quite a few hours to get my pain at a tolerable level and she was there the entire time making sure that things were improving. Because her shift ended prior to me reaching a tolerable pain threshold, she was not aware until the next day that all of her effort had paid off immensely. When I asked her the next day how her evening and day had gone, she said that it was hard for her to leave and focus on anything else because my pain had not subsided and that she continued to feel sad about my condition during her time away. What an amazing nurse!
I’ve been a patient a number of times over the past 5 years and have always been impressed with the nursing skill and compassion I have received at Sanford. However, if it were possible, I would break the mold after Shova. She is truly an angel!
