The nurse I am proud to nominate is Socorro Galano-Rogers RN, MSN, APN, CNOR, CAPA. I have personally known Ms. Galano-Rogers for 19 years. She has excellent communication skills and maintains an excellent rapport with patients, staff, and physicians. She has a great sense of humor and is adept in balancing friendliness with professionalism. She is a role model for others through her commitment to continuous learning and development.
I was excited to hear that UMDNJ-The University Hospital had partnered with the DAISY Award Program and I knew in an instant she was deserving of this recognition. As an Advanced Practice Nurse in Pre-Admission Testing, Socorro Galano-Rogers is also certified and cross trained in the Operating Room and the Recovery Room. She has worked here at UMDNJ-The University Hospital for almost 30 years in many different roles in Perioperative Services. In that time, she has exemplified what it means to be a leader in nursing, always going far above and beyond the requirements of her position. Filled with passion and compassion, she dreams big and then translates those dreams into reality.
Ms. Galano-Rogers not only displays her leadership qualities within the walls of University Hospital, but far beyond the organization. In her own time, Ms. Galano-Rogers participates as a volunteer with International Surgical Health Initiative (ISHI), who has organized several medical missions to the Philippines and other countries. However, its return in February 2012 was to the Southern region of Dapitan City. This area was rural and many of the patients, who require care, are not able to afford it. Along with a classmate who was raised in Dapitan City, Ms. Galano-Rogers proposed that the ISHI team conduct a surgical mission to Dapitan City. The goals of the mission were to provide quality care for those in desperate need, and teaching and instruction to the Operating Room staff. They hope to initiate a rapport with the hospital and one day return with another medical team.
The Pre-Admission Testing Department can be very stressful at times, but Ms. Galano-Rogers has an outstanding ability to remain calm under pressure. She goes beyond meeting the physiological needs of her patients, and takes extra time to meet their psychological need as well. She is a breast cancer survivor and never hesitates to share a story from her own journey with a patient to ease their fears and anxieties.
